We arrived in San Antonio, TX on Friday, 6-21-08. Hot and very dry. We spent the night at Alamo KOA camp located at 602 Gembler Road, San Antonio, TX. 350 sites with 30 and 50 amps, some extra long for pull through. They also have 22 log cabins and 3 log-cabin lodges with rates from $50 to $65 for cabins and $125- $130 for the lodges. Tens campers have wonderful wooded sites near the Salado Creek. To get there take IH10 East to San Antonio, exit 580 WW White Road, turn north to second light, Gembler Road, turn left go 1 mile. Rates are reasonable with swimming, fishing in the Salado Creek, rental pedal go-carts and it is pet friendly. Squeek liked that!

Public transportation, a bus will take you downtown and back for only $2. Don’t forget to ask for a Trolley pass that will take you anywhere downtown. And it’s free.! If you’re driving, San Antonio has a network of expressways that allows you to drive form one side of town to the other in just a few minutes. .

Points of interest in the area: Alamo, River Walk, Tower of the Americas, River Center Mall, Historic Market Square, with shopping and restaurants. Take a ride on the Rio San Antonio water taxi. The San Antonio River Walk itself has a history that dates back to 1921. From the earliest days of San Antonio, the river flooded repeatedly whenever there were heavy rains. The worst flood occurred in 1921. There as a tremendous destruction of property and tragic loss of life. There was serious talk of paving over the river and making it underground storm drainage. Luckily for us, some far-sighted citizens waged a campaign and the river was saved.

Speaking of farsighted, the new McNay Art Museum has opened a new ultra modern Jane and Arthur Stiern Center. Compares to Ft. Worth’s Kimbell Museum and the Menil Collection in Houston. The grand opening to this wonderful new facility was June 6 & 7 2008. It is a must see, more about it later.
